American Trademarks & Logotypes, 1987
A wonderful softcover book of corporate trademarks from the United States, published in 1987 by Japanese magazine Idea, and is a follow-up to the earlier release European Trademarks & Logotypes. The book collates trademarks by designer/studio and features a wide selection of work, including logos by Push Pin Studios, Siegal & Gale and Paul Rand. Amongst the logos, printed black, there are colour sections on logos in use, and the book moves from glossy pages to uncoated at the back. It's a beautiful and unexpected book with a striking cover of logos and stripes designed by Carol Feiler + Takenobu Igarashi, who also worked as the Art Editor and layout designer.
Towards the end of the book there are a series of short texts in English and Japanese that accompany some of the more famous corporate identity programmes such as Wells Fargo Bank, IBM and Westinghouse. These texts annotate the images, offering brief thoughts on the character of the work. This is followed by two essays printed in Japanese. These include "Design for Crown Zellerbach "Phase One" by Robert Miles Runyan and "Trademarks in the Sun: The Decorative Function by Barrett and Gaby".
