Design 6 No. 85, 1966

Regular price £90.00

"Design" is an out-of-print and hard to find issue of a slim 60 page Japanese magazine from the 60s and 70s dedicated to all things design. This issue, No.85 from 1966, includes a special 10 page feature on the logo design proposals for what was, at the time, known as Jexpo '70, which would later be changed to Expo '70. It features 16 of an initial 48 proposals put forward and includes Takeshi Otaka's winning design. The proposals are printed at a good size, two per page, and accompanied by a full page version of the final logo and the article “World’s Fair Symbol Selected!" by Masaru Katzumie, who was involved in the judging. He offers insight into the process, although leaves out aspects of criticism levelled at him by other jury members and the press. This article is in Japanese.

Also in this issue, there's a wonderful gatefold element that presents, with a material exactitude, wrapping paper and graphic design for Italian oranges. This is supported by a text by Cecilia Mora in Japanese. This section is in remarkable condition condsidering how delicate the material is. As a piece of publishing, it's really surprising, not something seen often today.
