IDEA Extra Issue: Graphic Design in Canada, 1975

A rare and hard to find copy of Japanese graphic design magazine Idea. This "Extra Issue" a series that ran parallel to Idea's quarterly magazine dives deep into the world of Canadian graphic design, presenting, by studio and designer, the very best in Canadian corporate identity design, typography and advertising.

A striking cover of overlapping maple leaves, creating a series of bird-like forms–created by Japanese designer Shigeo Fukuda, known for his playful themes and compositions–beautifully expresses with great immediacy the Canadian modernist's mastery of form and colour. And this plays out effectively across the issue's pages. Layouts, also by Shigeo Fukuda, effectively arrange work in a straightforward manner, with glossy sheets really bringing out the colour of the work of renowned designers such as Burton Kramer Associates and Carl Brett, amongst others. Moving between spreads of large logos printed in black and white, and full colour posters creates a wonderful rhythm of form and colour through the magazine, and lives up to the promise of the cover.

IDEA / アイデア is a quarterly magazine dedicated to graphic design and typography. It was first published in 1953 by Seibundo Shinkosha Co.,Ltd, and continues to publish today.
